In The News:
JetBlue Airways (JBLU) pilots voted to unionize ending the carrier’s status as one of the last nonunion airlines in the US. More than 70% of JetBlue’s pilots voted on Tuesday to join the Air Line Pilots Associates, the world’s largest pilots union by members. JetBlue’s shares fell on the news as investors worry if the move will eventually increase costs at the discount airline. In recent securities filling the company said unionization was one of the biggest risks to its business.
McDonald’s (MCD), the fast-food giant, reported declining earnings on Tuesday, falling well short of analysts’ expectations. The world’s biggest hamburger chain said sales at U.S. locations fell 1.7 percent in the first quarter as guest counts fell due to bad weather. The decline in sales and customers reflects the struggles that McDonald’s faces as people flock to chains that position themselves as higher-quality alternatives to traditional fast food. To adapt to the shifting trends, McDonald’s has started rolling out new prep tables in its U.S. kitchens that can hold more sauces and toppings with the idea to eventually offer greater customization on its menu while keeping orders easy to assemble for workers.
